As I continue to get closer to the finish line at UW-River Falls,  I have been finding that various videos shown in class, short clips shared by my mother, or segments that I have come across while watching morning television are very relatable, inspirational, and eye-opening “ah hah moments”. I am beginning to realize that I am meant for teaching. Traveling to Japan really made me appreciate what a good education can offer to a person’s life, but it is …

The final camp went well, again, especially considering that most of us were running on fumes, had put forth all the energy we had in all of the previous camps, but understood the importance of this final camp and could see the light and the end of the tunnel. As if we weren’t tired enough, the last camp consisted of a large school of elementary girls – complete with 3 hours a day of mandatory recreation time! This camp was …

A big change in my attitude about the program was in large part to the appreciation of the campers. About half-way through the trip, one of the JD’s began to read the camp evaluations completed by the students. I really wish this process would have occurred earlier in the trip, but at the same time this came right at a good opportunity to remind the AC’s why they were in Japan and what their purpose was. Being in a foreign …

Up until now, the only camp that has been somewhere other than Global Arena was the first camp in Iwata. Five of us that were at the camp at Global Arena hopped on the Shinkasen and headed to Hiroshima for a camp consisting of 120 middle school boys and girls. Thankfully everyone would be returning to Global Arena for one night before our final camp, so I was able to leave the majority of my belongings in a locker and …

Lead AC – Final Camp at Global Arena

http://www.mnsara.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/DSC_0302-150x150.jpg

My homestays were very refreshing and I was ready to get my final 3 camps going. Once I was dropped off at Hakata station, I was informed about my camp at Global Arena and that I would be the lead AC at – without an AD there. The camp consisted of 2 JC’s, 6 AC’s and me. The difficult part was getting everything organized because the schedule was going to be a little hectic – unlike what the other AD’s …

Traveling – Part 2: FUKUOKA

http://www.mnsara.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/P8162119-150x150.jpg

Traveling – Part 2: FUKUOKA I had an incredible time in Tokyo and I was not ready to leave. However, I had to get back to Fukuoka by 4:00 because I was going on my home-stay trip that was set-up through Guy Healy. I was looking forward to it, but at the same time I really wanted to just stay in Tokyo. My homestay trip was much different, and there was no other AC accompanying me, but I ended up …

Traveling – Part 1: TOKYO

http://www.mnsara.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/DSC01909-e1314111032531-150x150.jpg

Traveling – Part 1: TOKYO My neighbor, Linda, emailed her husbands friend from college who lives and has a family in Tokyo (Isao). We had been emailing back and forth and he invited Erin and I to come stay at his house and show us around the city. Erin and I arrived at the train station with every intension of sleeping on the train ride to Tokyo, but instead we sat up playing cribbage until we couldn’t even count straight …

Taking the position of a Lead AC

After 3 very strict camps I was given the opportunity to be the lead AC for a small, 12 middle school/high schoolgirls, camp with 2 other AC’s and one JC. Fortunately, the 2 AC’s were the girls who I’ve become closest with and am excited to be able to see and talk to once I’m back home. Camp went well and it was a great experience to be held accountable for the outcome of the camp, but still have an …

1 Day off in the middle

http://www.mnsara.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/DSC01772-150x150.jpg

What’s the best thing to do on a day off after 9 days of camps? (plus 3 more days of camp on the way)…go to the beach! Our entire team was off to Fukuoka to enjoy a day off. Some stayed and shopped around Hakata station while myself and others took advantage of the free bus ride to the beach by Fukuoka tower! We had a great time swimming, touching jellyfish, and enjoyed the beautiful view. The only thing better …

Enjoying Camps and Looking Forward to a Deserved Break

4 3-Day camps in a row…13 Days = 12 days of camps, only 1 prep day. So far I’m over ½ way done with my longest streak of camps, and exactly 1/2 done with my trip! These camps have been really interesting because they are very different from our typical camps. The first 2 camps were Junior High students from the same school, just split in half so that it wasn’t such a large group. The first ½ of girls …
